I am a big fan of his work. I haven’t read all of it, but I have read quite a bit. I think many folks are familiar with The Professor and the Madman: it was a huge bestseller. But I’ve also enjoyed The Map That Changed the World and Krakatoa: The Day the World Exploded: August 27, 1883, among his other works. One of the things I particularly liked about Krakatoa was that Winchester took the time to give a mini-review of “Krakatoa: East of Java”. (Spoiler: he didn’t like it. And not just because Krakatoa is not actually east of Java.)
There’s a nice appreciation in the NYT for John Thorne, food writer, although I don’t think the paper actually published an obit for him. I’ve read one of his books, and liked it. I would gladly read more of his work, but it doesn’t seem to show up used very often. I guess that says something about the quality of his work.
