Davis, 59, had an overall record of 28-23 with three bowl appearances in four seasons, but he steered UNC into what he said earlier this week was the most serious issue the school has faced in decades. A school with a strong track record of rules compliance saw 14 players miss at least one game and seven sit out the entire 2010 season in connection with the NCAA investigation into impermissible benefits given to players and into academic misconduct.

The Astros are 15th in the 16-team National League with a 4.69 ERA and lead the league in blown saves, having coughed up 13 in 23 chances.

Kuester was named head coach in the summer of 2009 and compiled a regular-season record of 57-107 in two seasons with the Pistons.

It doesn’t exactly sound like the players were fond of him, either.

Jim Tressel out at Ohio State. The Columbus Dispatch says he resigned, but strongly suggests he was pushed.

Everyone was expecting this in light of Ohio State’s recent troubles, and I get the feeling someone thought it was good timing to do this over a holiday weekend.

I would argue that he deserves to be fired for that yellow jacket and tie combination alone. In this case, it looks like the issue isn’t his sartorial choices, or his record (145-61 over six seasons) but problems with the NCAA and unauthorized bratwurst.

Pat Knight fired as Texas Tech basketball coach.

This does not seem to have been unexpected, with a 13-18 record (5-11 in conference).

Overall, the younger Knight went 50-60 during his three years at Tech, which saw the Red Raiders log a single winning record in 2009-10 and no appearances at the NCAA Tournament.
