Norts spews.

Tuesday, January 13th, 2015

Well. Well well well. Well. Yes, I am happy about Ohio State winning; as my regular readers know, I have ties to the Ohio area.

Since I don’t have cable, I mostly followed the game on FARK until I dozed off after halftime (yesterday was a rough day at work). From what I can tell, it might be a good idea for Ohio State to spend some time in the off season working on HOLDING ON TO THE DAMN BALL!

I don’t have a lot to say about the John Fox “firing” right now, except that I think it will be interesting to see how things play out after the Superb Owl. I may have more to say once this week’s TMQ goes up.

Obit watch: Roy Tarpley, former center for the Dallas Mavericks. As my regular readers know, I’m not a basketball fan, but the Tarpley story is sad and worth noting:

He was suspended by the NBA after five games in the 1989-90 season after being arrested for driving while intoxicated and resisting arrest. In 1991, he drew another suspension after a second DWI arrest and, a few months later, had a third violation and was banned from the league for violating the NBA’s drug-use policies.
He returned to the Mavericks briefly in 1994 but then was permanently barred in December 1995 for violating terms of his aftercare program.

TMQ Watch: December 30, 2014.

Tuesday, December 30th, 2014

We hope everyone had a good Christmas – or, if you do not celebrate Christmas, a good version of whatever seasonal observance you do celebrate.

In this week’s TMQ, the purge.

No, not that one (though we commend to your attention the “The Purge” episode of “Phil and Lisa Ruin the Movies”), but the annual NFL coaching purge, or as we call it, “Bloody Monday”. After the jump…

More blood for the blood god!

Tuesday, December 30th, 2014

The hapless Jacksonville Jaguars have fired offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch.

In other news, am I allowed to laugh maniacally at the idea of Gary Kubiak coaching the Jets?

Bloody Monday.

Monday, December 29th, 2014

This is your official NFL firings thread, which will be updated through the day as more people get the axe.

Jim Harbaugh was well reported yesterday (I was out and about). Technically, they’re making noises like it wasn’t a firing, but I still count it as one.

Rex Ryan and John Idzik (the general manager) are confirmed out at the Jets. No great shock.

Mike Smith is out at Atlanta: the press conference is at 11 AM Eastern, but ESPN has the press release.

Marc Trestman and Phil Emery (the general manager) are both out in Chicago, according to “sources”.

Kings! Kings of Sacramento!

Monday, December 15th, 2014

Unconfirmed reports indicate that the Sacramento Kings (who are a basketball team) have fired coach Michael Malone.

Updates to follow.

Edited to add 12/16: It took a long time for the team to make an official announcement, but they finally did.

“Philosophical differences”? So, what, Malone was a Kantian, and D’Alessandro is a follower of divine command theory?

A few small notes for December 1, 2014.

Monday, December 1st, 2014

Noted for the record: Bo Pelini out at Nebraska. He was 67-27 overall, and his teams never won less than 9 games a season.

And it has been a bad few days for defensive coordinators: Ellis Johnson out at Auburn, Mike Breske out at Washington State (along with linebacker coach Paul Volero), and Mark Snyder out at Texas A&M.

This isn’t quite a firing, but ESPN is reporting strong speculation that the University of Alabama at Birmingham is going to eliminate their football program. More here.

Your loser update: week 11, 2014.

Monday, November 17th, 2014

NFL teams that still have a chance to go 0-16:

Oakland.

The Raiders play Kansas City at home on Thursday. I’m a little nervous about this one.

And in other news, Philadelphia is the only team that has a chance to finish the NBA season 0-82. (Currently, the 76ers are 0-9.)

For the record: Will Muschamp out as coach of the University of Florida Gators. The Miami Herald is representing this as a resignation; reading between the lines, it sounds like he jumped before he could be pushed.

The autumn wind is a pirate…

Tuesday, September 30th, 2014

I love this time of year. The leaves are changing, if you live in one of those places. Around here, the temperature is getting to the point where you can consider doing stuff outdoors, or even dining on a patio if that’s your thing. The NFL season is picking up.

And we have our first NFL coach firing: Dennis Allen of the Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders won four games in each of Allen’s first two seasons and recorded an 8-28 mark during his two-plus seasons. The Jacksonville Jaguars at 6-30 are the only team with a worse record during that span.

Allen also has the distinction of being the first coach hired and fired in the Mark Davis era.

I have a great deal of confidence in the Raiders ability to remain winless this coming week. The question I have is: what happens the following week? Do they get the dead cat bounce against the Chargers? I wouldn’t put it past them. Perhaps I should keep an eye on the line…

What’s wrong with Kansas?

Monday, September 29th, 2014

Apparently, nothing that firing Charlie Weis won’t cure.

He was 6-22 overall, and 1-18 in conference. I’m pretty sure this is the first major school coach firing of the year. (Corrections welcome if I’m wrong.)

How ’bout those Astros?

Monday, September 1st, 2014

They’ve actually been doing better this year; the various sites I use have been projecting around 92 losses this season.

Better, but not better enough.

In a clear showing of who is in charge of the club, the Astros on Monday fired managed Bo Porter as well as bench coach Dave Trembley, just days after reports arose of tensions between Porter and his general manager, Jeff Luhnow.

Random notes, some administrative, for April 23, 2014.

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2014

Apologies for the extended radio silence. The past few days have been busy.

As many of the Whipped Cream Irregulars know, Sunday was my birthday, as well as Easter. This will not happen again until 2025.

Anyway, Mike the Musicologist came up late Friday night, rented a Silvercar, and we drove down to San Antonio on Saturday to do some gun shopping, tour Ranger Creek (which will be the subject of another post), and have dinner with Andrew and Lawrence at Bohanan’s (which may be the subject of another post).

I spent Easter Sunday with family, eating an excellent ham from the Noble Pig and a very good cake baked by my sister. (I don’t remember which cookbook she got the recipe from, but I thought it was very good; perhaps she’ll post here and update.)

Then on Monday, MtM and I took the Silvercar to Dallas, where we did some more gun shopping (including a stop at Cabela’s, but not that one), had a very good lunch at Chop House Burgers, and did some shopping for tacky souvenirs of pre-revolutionary America at the 6th Floor Museum shop.

So Saturday through Monday were jam packed. (For the record, I did not buy any guns. Though I was really tempted by the Sig Sauer 1911 22 at GrabAGun. I was also tempted at one of the San Antonio gun stores that had a couple of Nylon 66s, but I just can’t bring myself to pay $350 for one, even if it did have a scope.)

(Edited to add: Also, $1,300 for a K-22, even if it was an early post-war gun with the box, seems really really high.)

Anyway, I’m back and trying to get caught up on blogging. Profuse thanks to MtM for organizing the weekend.

Some people call him Maurice…

Sunday, February 9th, 2014

…but not “Coach” any longer: Maurice Cheeks out as head coach of the Pistons, in what I believe is the first NBA coach firing of the season.

Cheeks was hired in the offseason last year and coached a total of 50 games for Detroit, with a 21-29 record.

(Hattip: Lawrence.)

Random notes: January 8, 2014.

Wednesday, January 8th, 2014

Jeff Ireland out as general manager in Miami, on the heels of the Mike Sherman firing. This is being spun as “by mutual agreement”:

A club source said Ireland was going to lose much, if not all, of his decision-making power. Owner Stephen Ross intended to hire an executive with personnel authority over Ireland, a situation that was not acceptable to Ireland.

106 individuals charged in a massive, multi-decade long Social Security disability fraud scheme. Included in the indictments are 72 former NYC police officers and eight former NYC firefighters.

More to come. I’m getting a slow start this morning, but I do plan a gun show post as soon as I’m able to get one up. Assuming Lawrence doesn’t beat me to it.

Firings and other random notes: January 7, 2014.

Tuesday, January 7th, 2014

At this point, it is probably easier to list who the Houston Texans have not fired:

Assistant head coach/defensive line Bill Kollar.

Also out of a job: Miami offensive coordinator (and former Texas A&M head coach) Mike Sherman.

The latest episode of “American Experience”, which is airing tonight on most PBS stations (7 PM on KLRU, with repeats at 1 AM and 3 AM) is an adaptation of Deborah Blum’s The Poisoner’s Handbook, about forensic toxicology in New York during the 1920s and 1930s. I thought this was a swell book, and I generally enjoy the “American Experience” documentaries, so I commend this to your attention.

And another one down…

Saturday, January 4th, 2014

Legendary former Houston Oiler Mike Munchak, who went on to coach the Tennessee Titans for three seasons, was fired today.

He was 22-26; the team finished 7-9 this year.

The decision ends Munchak’s 31-year run with the franchise that dated back to him being drafted by the Houston Oilers in 1982. Munchak later served as a long-time offensive line coach with the team before he was hired to replace Jeff Fisher in 2011.

Also:

The team offered him an opportunity to return, with conditions. Among them included parting ways with a good portion of his coaching staff. Munchak declined to do so, and the two sides agreed to part ways.
