Tuesday, October 13th, 2015Steve Spurrier is “retiring” “immediately” as head coach of South Carolina. This may not technically be a “firing”, but his team was 2-4 so far this year, 0-4 in the SEC, and “have lost eight of their past nine SEC games dating to the past season.”
Steve Sarkisian’s indefinite suspension has turned into a firing. Again, this is one of those I’m not getting a lot of pleasure out of: I hope he gets the help he needs.

Friday, July 3rd, 2015The St. Louis Cardinals fired director of scouting Chris Correa yesterday.
Why do I bring this up? Granted, it is sportsfirings.com, but I don’t cover every minor executive firing.
But this is special. Correa is apparently the team’s first sacrifice in the great hacking scandal.
St. Louis attorney Jim Martin, a former federal prosecutor who is conducting the Cardinals’ internal investigation, declined to say if Correa’s dismissal was linked to the FBI case.
However, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that Correa acknowledged breaking into the database to determine whether the Astros had stolen proprietary data from the Cardinals.
If he actually did admit “breaking into the database”, I think being fired is probably the least of his problems…

Some interesting things about this:
- The university is spinning this as an agreed upon parting of the ways.
- Barnes says he wanted to stay, was told last week his job was safe, and he was let go for refusing to fire some of his assistant coaches.
- Barnes is owed $1.75 million in severance pay. But if UT had waited until Wednesday to fire him, they would only have owed him $1.5 million. I wonder what the hurry was.

Tuesday, January 13th, 2015Well. Well well well. Well. Yes, I am happy about Ohio State winning; as my regular readers know, I have ties to the Ohio area.
Since I don’t have cable, I mostly followed the game on FARK until I dozed off after halftime (yesterday was a rough day at work). From what I can tell, it might be a good idea for Ohio State to spend some time in the off season working on HOLDING ON TO THE DAMN BALL!
I don’t have a lot to say about the John Fox “firing” right now, except that I think it will be interesting to see how things play out after the Superb Owl. I may have more to say once this week’s TMQ goes up.
Obit watch: Roy Tarpley, former center for the Dallas Mavericks. As my regular readers know, I’m not a basketball fan, but the Tarpley story is sad and worth noting:
He was suspended by the NBA after five games in the 1989-90 season after being arrested for driving while intoxicated and resisting arrest. In 1991, he drew another suspension after a second DWI arrest and, a few months later, had a third violation and was banned from the league for violating the NBA’s drug-use policies.
He returned to the Mavericks briefly in 1994 but then was permanently barred in December 1995 for violating terms of his aftercare program.

Jim Harbaugh was well reported yesterday (I was out and about). Technically, they’re making noises like it wasn’t a firing, but I still count it as one.
Rex Ryan and John Idzik (the general manager) are confirmed out at the Jets. No great shock.
Mike Smith is out at Atlanta: the press conference is at 11 AM Eastern, but ESPN has the press release.
Marc Trestman and Phil Emery (the general manager) are both out in Chicago, according to “sources”.
Kings! Kings of Sacramento!
Monday, December 15th, 2014Unconfirmed reports indicate that the Sacramento Kings (who are a basketball team) have fired coach Michael Malone.

Edited to add 12/16: It took a long time for the team to make an official announcement, but they finally did.
