But hey, the Indians are doing well. Indeed, it seems like there’s a very good chance that I’ll end up owing Lawrence $5…

Fun fact I didn’t realize until today: the Browns do not have a bye until week 13. This seems strange, especially since there are no teams with a bye in week 12.

Don’t have anything witty or profound or perceptive to add here.

At this point in 2015, there was only one team left in contention for the Owen Sixteen trophy. At this point in 2014, there were only two teams left standing (and one had a bye that week.)
Do the Browns have a shot? Ask me again in week eight.

At some point, I’m thinking I should post an analysis of the loser update. I want to say that I have fairly ready access to about ten years worth of data: I’d like to do an actual breakdown of, on average, how many teams remain standing at each point in the season.
I’ve also been thinking, based on a comment from Lawrence, about doing a breakdown of time between winning national championship and getting fired for college coaches, but that may require more work.
Damn. I knew I was forgetting something. Late start this morning. Sorry

We’re starting to get down to it now. Only four teams left standing. For personal reasons, I hate to think Cleveland has the best shot at the Owen Sixteen trophy, but objectively it is starting to look that way.
I’m a little surprised Easterbrook hasn’t held forth on the football gods waxing wrothful against the Saints, or something like that. But the season is still young.
(And there’s still no word I’ve seen on TMQ this year.)
Down to it.

Miami

Cleveland
Jacksonville
Indianapolis
Washington

I had hopes for the LA Rams this year: I think it would have been delightful to see the NFL return to Los Angeles and go 0-16. Sadly, that didn’t pan out. So who’s left? I’m still thinking Jacksonville has a good shot at the goal.
As foretold in the prophecy.

I’m kind of disappointed that Bobby Three Sticks wasn’t enough to pull Cleveland out of the dumpster (and he’s apparently going to be out for at least eight weeks). But hey, half the teams lose their first game anyway: we’ve still got 15 games to go.
Likewise, I’m semi-happy the Texans won, but we’ve still got 15 games to go…
Sadly, no chance of a Detroit repeat this year. Maybe San Diego? Or Jacksonville?
NFL loser update returns tomorrow, for the record.
Bobby Chacon is dead at the age of 64.
Mr. Chacon won the featherweight title in 1974 and the super featherweight title in 1982. He was 59-7-1 over his career (1972-1988).
This inspired one of Warren Zevon’s best songs:
Also among the dead: Eddie “Crazy Eddie” Antar.
Cary Blanchard, NFL placekicker. He was 47.
Alexis Arquette, character actress and member of the Arquette acting family.
Bad day for sports.
Pat Summitt, University of Tennessee basketball coach. Knoxville News-Sentinel. ESPN.
She was only 64. Alzheimer’s sucks.
Buddy Ryan, one of the great NFL defensive coaches. ESPN.
Noted without comment:
Beth Howland passed away December 31st of last year, but her death was not announced until yesterday, in keeping with the wishes of her family.
She played Amy in the original Broadway production of Sondheim’s “Company”, and had a slew of other roles. Ms. Howland was perhaps most famous as Vera on “Alice”.
I kind of wonder if she was typecast after “Alice”: the obit says she worked “sporadically”.
Also:
(Wouldn’t “After Alice” be a great idea for a new TV series? Linda Lavin is still alive: she could have taken over the diner from Mel. Polly Holliday is still alive, too: she could be working the counter, and then you cast someone to play Vera’s daughter, who works as a waitress…Hollywood types, you know where to reach me.)
The AV Club is reporting the passing of Burt Kwouk, who sounds like a very cool and interesting guy. He was in three Bond films, but is perhaps best known as Cato in the Peter Sellers “Pink Panther” movies. (Edited to add: NYT obit.)
Not exactly obits, but worth noting in my opnion: both Bubba Smith and Dave Mirra have been diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy.
And so we come to the end of Gregg Easterbrook’s first season writing TMQ for the New York Times. What does he have in store for us this week? Would you believe neuroscience and the evils of the NFL? Well, yes, you probably would believe that.
After the jump, this week’s ultimate TMQ…
TMQ is going to be particularly insufferable this week.
How did TMQ spend the most boring week in sports? Let’s find out. This week’s TMQ, after the jump…
