Apologies for the silence the past two days. I have been busy assisting the police with their inquiries.

Thursday, March 7th, 2024Obit watch: January 2, 2024.
Tuesday, January 2nd, 2024It was a busy weekend, so I’m playing obit catch-up here. Administratively, I plan to get TMQ Watch up at some point during the day.
Tom Wilkinson. THR. IMDB.
This has been pretty well covered, but I did want to make an observation. When I was at St. Ed’s, for my “Film and Literature” class, we had to watch “In the Bedroom” and read Andre Dubus’s “Killings”. I thought “Bedroom” was a pretty terrific movie: both Wilkinson and Sissy Spacek give career peak performances. If you have not seen it, I commend it to your attention.
(The Dubus story is good, too.)
Shecky Greene, comedian. THR. IMDB.
…
Although never known as the most decorous of comedians, Mr. Greene made news in the comedy world in 2014 when he stormed out of a Friars Club event in Manhattan and announced that he was resigning from the club after his fellow comedian Gilbert Gottfried did material that Mr. Greene, who had been scheduled to speak, found offensive.
“He got dirtier and dirtier,” Mr. Greene told a radio interviewer, without providing details, “so I got up and I said, ‘That’s it.’”
Cale Yarborough, one of the NASCAR greats.
Travel day.
Wednesday, November 8th, 2023Blogging will be as time permits for about the next week.
Public statement for the record.
Thursday, September 21st, 2023While I am a Cisco employee, I have no additional information about the Splunk acquisition beyond what has already been made public.
If I did have such information – which, again, I do not – I could not legally discuss it here anyway.
Just sayin’.
In keeping with the established policy of this blog…
Saturday, August 26th, 2023…Bob Barker tomorrow, so things have time to settle and obits have time to be corrected.
Travel day.
Thursday, August 3rd, 2023On the road again. Blogging will be catch as catch can for a few days.
Stop! Travel time!
Monday, June 19th, 2023It is that time of year again, if you know what I mean and I think you do.
I’m going to be on the road for a bit. Blogging will be catch as catch can, but I will try to keep up with obits and maybe even post a few photos here and there.
In the meantime, how about a musical interlude?
Administrative update.
Thursday, February 9th, 2023The list of Austin City Council members has been updated.
It will, I hope, stay that way for the next five minutes or so.
I’ve included staff information when and where it is available. Which led me to note: notorious gun-grabber Ed Scruggs is now the “Constituent Director & Policy Aide” for District 8 council member/mayor pro tem Paige Ellis.
I encourage folks to be polite and respectful in their communications with these folks. Next up: the Travis County Commissioners, then the Congressional reps. Maybe I can get those done this weekend? We’ll see.
(I’ve made some good progress on part 2 of “Day of the .45”, but I still need to take photos, do some proofreading, and triple-check my sources. I might get to the photos this weekend, but again, we’ll see.)
UN-altered REPRODUCTION and DISSEMINATION of this IMPORTANT Information is ENCOURAGED, ESPECIALLY to COMPUTER BULLETIN BOARDS.
Apologies.
Friday, February 3rd, 2023I apologize for the radio silence the past couple of days.
The power at our house went out shortly before 7 AM (CT) on Wednesday and is still not restored at the time of this writing.
I was thinking it’d be back on sometime on Wednesday. Then I was thinking sometime on Thursday.
I’ve gone into the office this morning to get work done and things charged. I managed to keep the cell phones charged up by tapping the battery on my laptop, but I ran that down to 2% before I got into the office. I have a UPS protecting the network equipment at the house (cable modem/router/issued work from home gear) but it feels like the same event that took out the power also took out Spectrum internet in our area, so I couldn’t get an Internet connection anyway. And by now, the UPS is fully discharged (though it will run for about five hours with all that crap connected to it).
To be clear about this, the issue is not an ERCOT/power grid problem, like it was a while back. This is just simply ice accumulation on power lines bringing them down, and ice accumulation on trees causing limbs to fall and take out power lines.
Edited to add: power restored at our house at about 1 PM CT today. So that’s about 54 hours without electricity, by my reckoning.
Administrative notes.
Tuesday, January 24th, 2023I haven’t forgotten about part two of Day of the .45. I do want to get that up. Unfortunately, the weather on Saturday was bad for photo taking, Sunday was entirely consumed by battleship, and the weather so far this week is also kind of hinky.
This weekend is looking less busy, so if the weather holds up and we get some sunlight, I may be able to take some photos and get a post up.
Also have some more books to post about as well, but that should be an easier process as it does not depend so much on good weather. Possibly Thursday?
And I also have not forgotten that I need to update the City Council/Commissioner’s Court/Congressional Representatives lists. That is, for sure, on the agenda, especially in light of recent events. As I think everyone knows, I try to wait until after January 20th to update those lists, as it takes time for people to get sworn in and websites to get updated. Updating those lists is also part of my evil master plan for this week.
Administrative note.
Monday, December 5th, 2022I feel like I shouldn’t need to say this, and that I have to say this.
I do not necessarily agree with all the comments I approve here. However, I will not censor comments except under very limited conditions:
- Obvious spam.
- Personal insults directed at other commenters.
- A court order from a court of competent jurisdiction. (However, to steal a line from Nick Fury: “I recognize the council has made a decision, but given that it’s a stupid-ass decision, I’ve elected to ignore it.”)
This is your yearly administrative note. Back on your heads.
Obit watch note.
Friday, October 28th, 2022While the death of Jerry Lee Lewis is being reported, it was also reported earlier in the week by an unreliable source I don’t link to, and that report turned out to be false.
The latest report is apparently from the AP, and seems more reliable. But I am still going to wait until tomorrow to post the obit watch.
Obit watch: August 15, 2022.
Monday, August 15th, 2022Anne Heche, for the record. THR.
On an administrative note, this has been an unusual situation that I didn’t know how to handle. Various outlets were reporting her death, in the sense that she had been declared brain-dead, which qualifies as legal death under California law. However, those outlets were reporting that she was still on life support while the hospital looked for a compatible recipient for her organs. I made the administrative decision that I would not run an obit watch for her until the NYT ran an obit. Unfortunately, the NYT sometimes takes a day or three or more to run obits: in this case, they didn’t take that long.
I’m still not sure I made the right call in this case. Between Ms. Heche and Tony Dow, it’s been kind of a weird time for the obit watch.
Robyn Griggs, actress. She was a regular on “Another World” and “One Life To Live”, but really didn’t have a lot of credits other than those.
Denise Dowse. Other credits include “Seinfeld”, “Starship Troopers”, the 2003 “Dragnet” series, and “A Stone Cold Christmas”.
Triskaidekaphobia.
Friday, July 29th, 2022I forgot to post this yesterday, even though I had a reminder on my calendar. I’ve been busy working on a couple of small projects, including some forthcoming random gun crankery and a project for the Smith and Wesson Collectors Association.
But I didn’t want to go too much longer without noting, for the record, that yesterday was the 13th anniversary of the blog.
13 years. Where did they go?
As usual, thanks to my army of supporters, especially Lawrence, Borepatch, Jimmy McNulty, pigpen51, RoadRich, Mike the Musicologist, and Joe D. Thanks also to KR Training (official firearms trainer to WCD), Sportsman’s Finest (official arms dealer to WCD) and to anyone else I have forgotten to thank.
Supposedly, the traditional 13th anniversary gift is lace, and the modern one is “fur and textiles”. I’ll pass on that, please, thank you. I really don’t want gifts: your readership is enough for me. Also, sending guns through the mail is not exactly legal (unless you send them to my FFL), and sending ammo is expensive.
Musical interlude time. I can’t remember if I’ve posted this recently, but Warren Zevon never wears out his welcome.
Here’s to another 13 years.
Travel Day II: The Traveling!
Monday, June 20th, 2022Heading home. Lack of content ahead. Will be getting in kind of late. Updates to follow.
