Obit watch note.

Friday, October 28th, 2022

While the death of Jerry Lee Lewis is being reported, it was also reported earlier in the week by an unreliable source I don’t link to, and that report turned out to be false.

The latest report is apparently from the AP, and seems more reliable. But I am still going to wait until tomorrow to post the obit watch.

Obit watch: August 15, 2022.

Monday, August 15th, 2022

Anne Heche, for the record. THR.

On an administrative note, this has been an unusual situation that I didn’t know how to handle. Various outlets were reporting her death, in the sense that she had been declared brain-dead, which qualifies as legal death under California law. However, those outlets were reporting that she was still on life support while the hospital looked for a compatible recipient for her organs. I made the administrative decision that I would not run an obit watch for her until the NYT ran an obit. Unfortunately, the NYT sometimes takes a day or three or more to run obits: in this case, they didn’t take that long.

I’m still not sure I made the right call in this case. Between Ms. Heche and Tony Dow, it’s been kind of a weird time for the obit watch.

Robyn Griggs, actress. She was a regular on “Another World” and “One Life To Live”, but really didn’t have a lot of credits other than those.

Denise Dowse. Other credits include “Seinfeld”, “Starship Troopers”, the 2003 “Dragnet” series, and “A Stone Cold Christmas”.

Triskaidekaphobia.

Friday, July 29th, 2022

I forgot to post this yesterday, even though I had a reminder on my calendar. I’ve been busy working on a couple of small projects, including some forthcoming random gun crankery and a project for the Smith and Wesson Collectors Association.

But I didn’t want to go too much longer without noting, for the record, that yesterday was the 13th anniversary of the blog.

13 years. Where did they go?

As usual, thanks to my army of supporters, especially Lawrence, Borepatch, Jimmy McNulty, pigpen51, RoadRich, Mike the Musicologist, and Joe D. Thanks also to KR Training (official firearms trainer to WCD), Sportsman’s Finest (official arms dealer to WCD) and to anyone else I have forgotten to thank.

Supposedly, the traditional 13th anniversary gift is lace, and the modern one is “fur and textiles”. I’ll pass on that, please, thank you. I really don’t want gifts: your readership is enough for me. Also, sending guns through the mail is not exactly legal (unless you send them to my FFL), and sending ammo is expensive.

Musical interlude time. I can’t remember if I’ve posted this recently, but Warren Zevon never wears out his welcome.

Here’s to another 13 years.

Travel Day II: The Traveling!

Monday, June 20th, 2022

Heading home. Lack of content ahead. Will be getting in kind of late. Updates to follow.

Travel day.

Wednesday, June 15th, 2022

Light blogging ahead.

Updates will be catch as catch can through next Monday.

I was constantly hearing “Get to the Austin airport three hours early! It’s a cluster! Three hours ahead of your scheduled flight!”

So I got to the airport at 0330 for my flight at 0640.

My bags were checked and I was through security by 0400. And the TSA people were actually pleasant.

(“Why are you taking a flight at 0640?” Wasn’t my choice: I originally booked it for 0830, which I thought was more reasonable. But Southwest changed it.)

Administrative note.

Wednesday, April 20th, 2022

Today’s my birthday.

Blogging is likely to be spotty, since I intend to spend as much time as I can messing around.

“Normal” schedule will probably resume tomorrow.

Administrative note, for those sent this way by Borepatch.

Tuesday, April 12th, 2022

I’m going to wait until tomorrow to post the Gilbert Gottfried obit roundup.

Generally, I like to wait at least a little bit after the passing is reported before I post an obit watch. The early obits are often just that: early, and incomplete. And sometimes (I’m looking at you, New York Times) they contain errors that are corrected later.

Dear Ross Ward…

Monday, April 4th, 2022

…I live in Austin, Texas.

Spamming the comments in my blog (especially the “Contact information for the Austin City Council” page) with posts about your campaign for South Carolina House District 112 is a bad idea for the following reasons:

  • I’m not going to vote for you, since I don’t live in South Carolina.
  • The vast majority of my readers aren’t going to vote for you, since they don’t live in South Carolina.
  • Any of my readers who do live in South Carolina won’t vote for you anyway because you are a spamming scumbag. Let me repeat that: Ross Ward is a spamming scumbag.
  • If you keep spamming my blog comments, I will be going to your ISP and I will be asking them to shut your site down.

Is there any word in what I just said that you have trouble understanding?

Hugs, kisses, and die in a fire Ross Ward you spamming scumbag. Sincerely, your friends at sportsfirings.com.

P.S. Strongly worded message follows.

Geopolitics.

Thursday, February 24th, 2022

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: I am not an expert on geopolitics.

If you’re looking for Ukraine coverage, there are a lot of people covering it who are much smarter than I am.

Travel day.

Monday, November 15th, 2021

Heading home. Light blogging ahead. Some patchy fog. Otherwise clear and cold.

Travel day.

Wednesday, November 10th, 2021

On the road again. Blogging will be catch as catch can for the next few days.

Administrative note.

Thursday, October 21st, 2021

I value and highly esteem all of the people who comment here.

(Except Eric from talk to customer dot com or whatever it is today. He can die in a fire.)

If I don’t respond to your comment, it isn’t because I don’t like you. It may be because I don’t have time. It may be because you said what needed to be said and responding “Mega dittos, Rush!” would be as superfluous as painting a mustache on the Mona Lisa.

(Duchamp did it.)

(You know, if you’re going to put a button on your page that says “Order Oil Painting Reproduction”, when I push that button…take me to the page where I can actually order an oil painting reproduction of that specific piece, not your generic art page.)

(Of course, the original wasn’t an oil painting anyway, so an oil painting reproduction would be odd.)

(“1940, Paris
Color reproduction, made by Duchamp from original version
Stolen in 1981 and never recovered”

Yet another piece to add to the “decorate my house with reproductions of stolen art” list.)

But I digress.

Anyway, thank you to all my valued commenters, especially the ones who have been commenting over the past week or so. This isn’t prompted by anything in particular or any specific complaints. Just wanted to get this on the hysterical record.
