It has been a while since I’ve done one of these, so why not now?
But it does bother me a little that I can’t find a version of the song with the original lyrics.

Fun fact I didn’t realize until today: the Browns do not have a bye until week 13. This seems strange, especially since there are no teams with a bye in week 12.
Revelation 6:12-6:14:
I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind. The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.
I’m actually pretty conflicted over this.
On the one hand, as I’ve noted many times before, I have family in the Cleveland area. Some of them are Indians fans. One of my beloved family members who is a fan is also going through some serious health issues at the moment: I won’t go into detail to protect their privacy, but the Tribe winning would give them a much needed morale boost.
On the other hand, if the Cubs win:
1) It would shut up the Cubs fans and their perpetual wingeing about being the hardest luck fans in baseball.
II) Ideally, Steve Bartman would become a very small footnote in history.
c) I would win $5 from Lawrence.
So: family happiness, or $5 from Lawrence? Decisions, decisions.
Darrell Hazell out as Purdue football coach.

Don’t have anything witty or profound or perceptive to add here.

At this point in 2015, there was only one team left in contention for the Owen Sixteen trophy. At this point in 2014, there were only two teams left standing (and one had a bye that week.)
Do the Browns have a shot? Ask me again in week eight.

At some point, I’m thinking I should post an analysis of the loser update. I want to say that I have fairly ready access to about ten years worth of data: I’d like to do an actual breakdown of, on average, how many teams remain standing at each point in the season.
I’ve also been thinking, based on a comment from Lawrence, about doing a breakdown of time between winning national championship and getting fired for college coaches, but that may require more work.
The Chicago Cubs have been eliminated from postseason contention.
Oh, wait. Did I say the Chicago Cubs? I’m sorry. I intended to say “the New York Yankees”. My bad.
Obit watch: The Carnegie Deli. I’m sad for the people who will be losing their jobs, but:
Now I want to spend one night in Bangkok and try her pastrami and cheesecake
Isn’t it interesting how everything is the ex-husband’s fault?
Quel frommage! Seriously, it seems like it would be kind of hard to stay in business in New York City when you have to stay closed for nine months. Even if you also own the building. The one with the janky gas hookup.
Damn. I knew I was forgetting something. Late start this morning. Sorry

We’re starting to get down to it now. Only four teams left standing. For personal reasons, I hate to think Cleveland has the best shot at the Owen Sixteen trophy, but objectively it is starting to look that way.
I’m a little surprised Easterbrook hasn’t held forth on the football gods waxing wrothful against the Saints, or something like that. But the season is still young.
(And there’s still no word I’ve seen on TMQ this year.)
There was just a very slight chill in the air when I left work today. I drove all the way to my destination without having to use the air conditioner.
And in another sign that fall has arrived, we have our first major coach firing of the college football season: Les Miles out at LSU, along with offensive coordinator Cam Cameron. ESPN.
He was 114-34-0 overall at LSU. But the team was expected to be a national contender this year; they had a strong squad returning from last year. Instead, they started 2-2, losing to Wisconsin in their opening game and Auburn this past week. (Their two wins were against Jacksonville State and Mississippi State.)
There were a lot of deaths over the weekend, but I was away from a computer with an Internet connection for most of it. Getting caught up:
Arnold Palmer, drink innovator, sometime golfer, and good Pittsburgh boy. NYT. LAT. Golf Digest. The prose is a little purple:
José Fernández. Miami Herald. NYT.
It may just be me, but the tone of these obits rubs me kind of the wrong way. It seems like they’re saying “José Fernández, noted pitcher, is dead. Also two other guys, but they weren’t famous baseball pitchers, so who cares?” (And, yes, I understand that they’re withholding names until families are identified. But it still kind of reads like the other two guys just don’t matter.)
(Also: strict boat control.)
Bill Nunn, actor. NYT. A/V Club. He was Robbie Roberston in the Raimi “Spider-Man” movies (none of which I’ve seen) but was perhaps most famous as Radio Raheem in Spike Lee’s “Do The Right Thing”.
Down to it.

I had hopes for the LA Rams this year: I think it would have been delightful to see the NFL return to Los Angeles and go 0-16. Sadly, that didn’t pan out. So who’s left? I’m still thinking Jacksonville has a good shot at the goal.
As foretold in the prophecy.

I’m kind of disappointed that Bobby Three Sticks wasn’t enough to pull Cleveland out of the dumpster (and he’s apparently going to be out for at least eight weeks). But hey, half the teams lose their first game anyway: we’ve still got 15 games to go.
Likewise, I’m semi-happy the Texans won, but we’ve still got 15 games to go…
Sadly, no chance of a Detroit repeat this year. Maybe San Diego? Or Jacksonville?
NFL loser update returns tomorrow, for the record.
Bobby Chacon is dead at the age of 64.
Mr. Chacon won the featherweight title in 1974 and the super featherweight title in 1982. He was 59-7-1 over his career (1972-1988).
This inspired one of Warren Zevon’s best songs:
Also among the dead: Eddie “Crazy Eddie” Antar.
Cary Blanchard, NFL placekicker. He was 47.
