Notes towards a loser update.

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

The New Jersey Nets (who, by the way, are 0-16, and two games away from setting an NBA record for most consecutive losses to start a season; and they play the Lakers tonight) fired coach Lawrence Frank. Who says Bruce Ratner cares more about his real estate ventures than the Nets?

(By the way, that is not the firing I was expecting today. I was also not expecting Al Groh to be fired at Virginia quite yet, but when you go 3-9, and can’t beat your arch rival, your days are numbered. Groh apparently has pro experience with the Jets; could he go to the Bills? Or could he possibly be considered for the Notre Dame job?)

I see that the Texans once again managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

This doesn’t really qualify as a “loser” update per se, but last night I was able to have a very nice dinner at my sister’s place and watch the Baylor – Texas Tech game. I’m glad Tech pulled the game out, but it sure seems to me that there were a lot of missed and dropped passes. This victory strikes me as being one for the defense; and, as we all know, you can’t rely on defense to win games.

And the more Avatar commercials I see, the more I root for the movie to be an enormous flop.

A brief loser update: week 11.

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

The New Jersey Nets are now 0-13.

What the heck, Cleveland?

Ditto Pittsburgh.

Lawrence has a good post up about tonight’s Texans – Oilers Titans game.

The artist Jeanne-Claude, wife of Christo and his collaborator on “The Gates“, has died.  (NYT obit here.)

In other news, the Oakland Raiders have benched JaMarcus Russell, their number one draft pick in 2007. Per NFL.com, the Honorable Mr. Russell has a quarterback rating of 47.7 (at the time of this writing) which places him 30th. The only player he outranks at the moment is Derek Anderson of Cleveland, with a 36.2. To quote Gregg Easterbrook, “If every attempt by a quarterback falls to the ground incomplete, his rating is 39.6.

On Wednesday, the LPGA released its 2010 schedule, and despite the loss of 13 tournaments from two years ago, 17 open weeks in the season and a few TBDs (to be determineds), there is optimism among tour officials and players.

Fine. Just as long as it stays off my television. (Since I don’t have cable, the Golf Channel is perfectly okay.) The only televised sport I hate more than golf is women’s golf. (I have nothing against playing golf; though I’ve never done it myself, I’m sure it is a fine sport. But watching golf – men’s or women’s – is about as exciting as reading transcripts of Roman Hruska speeches.)

Irrational hatred.

I can’t explain why I dislike the Buffalo Bills. It has nothing to do with the Honorable Mr. Owens; I disliked the Bills before they signed him. It has nothing to do with Buffalo itself, a city that brought us the Buffalo wing, or Buffalo fans; I’m sure they are wonderful people who adopt stray puppies and help old ladies across the street. (I have a friend who used to live in Buffalo; he tells a great story about his experiences during one of the epic Buffalo snowstorms. When he talks about moving down the street with his cow-orkers, all of them roped together so they didn’t get lost in the blinding snow, you gain a new appreciation for Texas.) It has nothing to do with the Oilers and their spectacular collapse; if I was going to resent anyone for that, it would be the Oilers.

No, I really can’t explain it. But it does make me happy that Dick Jauron is the first coach firing of the season.

Your loser update: week 9.

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

I thought perhaps it was too much to expect another 0-16 run after last year. I had hopes that the Lions would make it 0-32, but those were dashed. But it hurts that Green Bay lost to Tampa. You see, I have a certain fondness for the Packers; I admire their ownership structure, and I have a certain amount of affection for the silly cheeseheads, among other reasons.

Sadly, the Pack wasn’t able to pull this one out.

NFL teams that still have a chance to go 0-16:

None.

That’s all, folks. Drive carefully, and remember to tip your waitress.

Edited to add: But, hey! The New Jersey Nets still have a shot at going 0-82! Too bad I don’t care about NBA basketball (or, as I like to call it, “our long national nightmare”).

Your loser update: week 8.

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

Well, well, well. It looks like the hapless Rams actually managed to pick up their first victory against none other than the hapless Detroit Lions in what should have been called the “Who Cares? Bowl”.

Also, in somewhat less amazing news, Tennessee actually managed to win a game against Jacksonville, even with Vince Young quarterbacking. I’m dubious about Young in the long term; we’ll see next week about the short term.

Tampa Bay had a bye this week, so…NFL teams that still have a chance to go 0-16:

Tampa

Your loser update: week 7.

Monday, October 26th, 2009

There’s not a whole lot to say at this point: Tennessee lost to the bye week, Tampa flew to London to get beat (thanks to Andrew for pointing that out), the Rams didn’t go anywhere and still got beat, and Jim Zorn is still employed at Washington (this could change after tonight).

NFL teams that still have a chance to go 0-16:

Tennessee (bye week)

Tampa

St. Louis

Your loser update: week 6.

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

The WP is reporting that Jim Zorn is no longer going to call plays; that duty will be turned over to someone to be named on Monday. I expect that Jim Zorn will no longer be employed by the Redskins as of Monday. Seriously, dude, you got beat by Kansas City?

On the other hand, I expect Jeff Fisher to stay employed at least until the end of the season; I believe he’s built up enough credibility with his past performance to be able to ride things out that long, even after being blown out 59-0.

Anyway, NFL teams that still have a chance to go 0-16:

Tennessee

Tampa

St. Louis

Your loser update: week 5.

Monday, October 12th, 2009

I have a feeling we’ve seen the end of the Jim Zorn era in Washington. When you lose to Detroit and Carolina, that’s a bad sign. Likewise, I’m thinking we’ve seen the end of the Wade Phillips and Tony Romo era in Dallas; the Cowboys struggled to beat the hapless Chiefs, and lost the opener in the PleasureDome. Jerry Jones isn’t going to put up with that when he has to sell tickets to the billion dollar monstrosity.

In other news, Cleveland is off the loser list after a titanic offensive battle against Buffalo, leaving us with only four NFL teams that still have a chance to go 0-16:

Tennessee

Kansas City

Tampa

St. Louis

Monday, October 5th, 2009

I stumbled across this article at ESPN totally by accident, and it brings back fond memories. Not as much of UT football, but of the Houston Oilers of the late 70’s.  (“Can you hear the blocking, the rambling and the roar? As he glides along the sidelines, by the hashmarks in the score…” Yes, I remember the lyrics somewhat differently.) But even if you were not an Oiler or UT fan, you have to admit Earl Campbell put a heck of a hit on Michael Downs.

This has been well covered elsewhere, but I’m sad to see Gourmet is closing. They’ve had a long tradition of highly literary food writing; check out the Endless Feasts collection for some examples (and how did Robert P. Tristram Coffin ever get forgotten, anyway?). And I thought they continued to do strong work under the editorship of Ruth “Pelt Me With Apples” Reichl; heck, she even published David Foster Wallace’s “Consider The Lobster” essay.

The problem is, I don’t think there’s a market any more for literary food writing. Cooks Illustrated is a better cooking magazine (though that tweedy little bow-tied jackass gets on my nerves), but sometimes I want a deeper consideration of food, along the lines of Wallace (even though I disagee with much of that essay) or Laura Shapiro.

And as other people pointed out; they killed Gourmet, and kept Your Prom?

(Edited to add: the TLB-TJ comments in the NYT.)

Your loser update: week 4.

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

We came very close to a situation without precedent this weekend. Had Cleveland and Cincinnati played to a tie, Cleveland still would have had a chance to go without a win this season. Because of the rules of the loser update, Cleveland would have had to come off this list in accordance with the prophecy (since they would not technically be able to go 0-16). Sadly, this situation was averted. (I have family in the area around Cleveland, so their 0-4 start brings me no joy.) Miami brings me joy as well; yes, they won and are now off the list, but they beat Buffalo.

That being said, NFL teams that still have a chance to go 0-16:

Cleveland

Tennessee

Kansas City

Carolina (bye week)

Tampa

St. Louis

So let it be written. So let it be done.

Edited to add: Our great and good friend Lawrence points out this tidbit by way of Sports Illustrated:  Washington went up against the (0-0) Giants in their first game, the (0-1) Rams in their second, the (0-2) Lions in their third,  (0-3) Tampa Bay in their fourth, and will be facing (0-3) Carolina next week, followed by (currently 0-4) Kansas City.

Lawrence also points out that if you just try to cut and paste from the SI site, you get some not so amusing results, so I’ve paraphrased above.

Your loser update: week 3.

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Before we begin this week’s loser update, let us pause for a moment of silence in honor of the Detroit Lions. So, so close to touching the pinnacle of failure, only to have those aspirations snatched away from them.

With that out of the way, NFL teams that still have a chance to go 0-16:

Miami

Cleveland

Tennessee

Kansas City

<This space intentionally left blank, in memory of the Lions.>

Carolina

Tampa

St. Louis

Loser update update.

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

The week 3 loser update won’t be available until Tuesday (0-2 Carolina plays Dallas Monday night) but how in the heck do you lose to the hapless Detroit Lions?

And what of Texas Tech? Losing to UT wasn’t so bad (tough game against a tough team), but being defeated in the last seconds by the University of Houston? Is there a Texas Monthly cover curse? Two losses this early in the season do not bode well.

Your loser update: week 2.

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

NFL teams that still have a chance to go 0-16:

Miami

Cleveland

Tennessee

Jacksonville

Kansas City

Detroit (19 straight losses now: remember, the record is 26.)

Carolina

Tampa

St. Louis

Your loser update: week 1

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

It’s the most wonderful time of year. There’s a nip in the air, the grackles are grackling, and the NFL season begins. And with the start of the NFL season, we also restart the loser update.

Last year was a great year; we had the first team to go 0-16 ever. Is it possible that we’ll have more than one team this year? Or a team that loses 16 games for two straight seasons? The excitement is palpable.

Without further ado, NFL teams that still have a chance to go 0-16:

Buffalo

Miami

Cincinnati

Cleveland

Tennessee

Jacksonville

Houston

Kansas City

Oakland

Washington

Chicago

Detroit (18 straight losses now: remember, the record is 26.)

Carolina

Tampa

Arizona
