Drew Bannister was fired yesterday as head coach of the St. Louis Blues.
This isn’t SportsHirings.com, but it is interesting: the Blues have already replaced Bannister…with Jim Montgomery, who you may recall was fired last week.

Wednesday, November 20th, 2024Jim Montgomery out as head coach of the Boston Bruins hockey team.
They were 120-41-23 in “three seasons”. 20 games into the current season, they’re 8-9-3.
The Bruins have been one of the NHL’s most notable disappointments this season. They’re 31st in team offense (2.40 goals per game) and 28th in defense (3.45 goals against per game).
Previously dependable aspects of the team have malfunctioned, in particular the goaltending. The team traded former Vezina winner Linus Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators for goalie Joonas Korpisalo. The Ullmark deal broke up the best goalie tandem in the NHL with 26-year-old Jeremy Swayman, who missed training camp during a bitter negotiation before signing an eight-year contract that will pay him $66 million.

Under Douglas, the Jets have a 30-64 record, no winning seasons and no playoff appearances.
The Charlotte 49ers have fired football coach Biff Poggi.

The good news is, former coach Biff is going to have more time to drink white wine spritzers at the club with Muffy, Buffy, and Brock.

Tom Herman out at Florida Atlantic. 6-16 in two seasons, and 0-6 in the AAC this season.
Don Brown out at the University of Massachusetts. 6-28 over “two plus seasons”, and they’re 2-8 so far.
Phil Longo out as offensive coordinator of the Wisconsin Badgers. I have not heard anything about mushrooms or the snake.
Stan Drayton out at Temple. 9-25 in “two plus” seasons, 4-18 in the AAC, and 0-15 on the road. But they actually won (in overtime) Saturday.

Dennis Allen out in New Orleans. 18-25 in more or less three seasons, and the Saints have lost seven games in a row.
The Raiders fired Luke Getsy as offensive coordinator. Also offensive line coach James Cregg and QB coach Rich Scangarello. The team is 2-7, and all three were in their first season with the Raiders. (Hattip: Lawrence.)

In other news, Josh Wolff was fired on Sunday as head coach of Austin FC, the soccer team. 45-30-60 over four seasons. Austin FC made the playoffs once in that period (2022).

Monday, September 23rd, 2024The Cincinnati Reds fired manager David Bell yesterday
Bell joined the Reds for the 2019 season and posted a 405-456 record over the last six seasons. He guided the Reds through COVID, managed a playoff team in 2020 and received his first of two contract extensions with the Reds in 2021.
In 2022, the Reds lost 100 games and went through a full rebuild. The Reds broke through in 2023 and were in the playoff race until the final weekend of the season. Bell received a contract extension last July as the young core impressed, but that momentum didn’t carry into 2024.
The Reds are currently 76-81, and have been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention.

Wednesday, September 4th, 2024Rael Enteen, VP of content for the Washington Commanders, has been suspended. Which isn’t technically a firing, but I kind of have a feeling it is going to turn into one.
What happened?
Mr. Enteen met a woman on the Hinge dating app. He went out to dinner with her twice. During those dates, he made some…unfortunate comments.
He told…that, “over 50% of our roster is white religious, and God says, ‘F— the gays.’ Their interpretation. I don’t buy any of that. Another big chunk is low-income African Americans that comes from a community that is inherently very homophobic.”
…Enteen also said some players are “dumb as hell” and said some who were smart don’t stay that way after getting hit in the head too many times. He also said those who “get their heads knocked around a few times” are more susceptible to conspiracy theories.
Enteen also said, “I don’t think the commissioner of the NFL hates gay people, hates black people. Jerry Jones, who really runs the NFL, I think he hates gay people, black people.”
Enteen, who was with the New York Jets for two years before coming to Washington, called the league’s social justice initiatives “performative.”
“It’s not done out of the goodness of their heart,” he said. “It’s done because George Floyd changed the game … It’s to make as much money as possible. The NFL cares about the bottom line, like any corporation, above all else.”
Enteen said because the league makes so much money, “they can faux prioritize DEI for the sake of good publicity.
“Enteen told…that “most of the fans are high-school-educated alcoholics” and called them “mouth breathers.”
There were just two problems with these comments:
1) His date recorded them.
2) His date was actually “…an undercover reporter for the O’Keefe Media Group.”
Kind of a big “whoops” there. But remember: these people hate you, and they want your money.

Thursday, August 22nd, 2024I am seeing reports that the Seattle Mariners are going to fire general manager Scott Servais.
Right now, this is all just “sources” and nobody’s reporting anything definite yet. The Entertainment and Sports Programming Network isn’t even covering the story.
Realistically, it was the culmination of two months of losing and failure following that apex day June 18.
Since that high-water mark above .500, the Mariners have posted a 20-33 record, losing their 10-game division lead in a span of 24 games and now trailing the Astros by five games. Only the hapless Chicago White Sox have had a worse record over that stretch (10-43).
Following Wednesday’s 8-4 loss in which they were swept in a three-game series by the Dodgers in Los Angeles to close out the trip, the Mariners fell to an even 64-64. The previous time the Mariners were at .500 was April 24 when they were 12-12.
When I see something beyond “sources say”, I’ll update here.

Thursday, August 8th, 2024This is not going to become the “all White Sox, all the time” blog.
But this is sportsfirings.com, so I do have to report that the White Sox fired manager Pedro Grifol. Chicago Tribune. ESPN.
Mr. Grifol was 89-190 over less than two seasons. The Sox were 61-101 last year. Currently, they are 28-89, for a .239 winning percentage. That projects out to 123 losses this season if trends continue. Looking at things another way, in order to lose only 119 games (and be better than the 1962 Mets) they will have to go 15-30 over the rest of the season, for a .333 winning percentage in the remaining games.

Probability of a franchise-record 107 or more losses: 99.9%.
Probability of a modern era record of 121 or more losses: 41.9%

Their season starts August 31st. Should be interesting to see who they find to coach.
The reason?
There’s a second day story that gives more specifics. Apparently, Coach Anderson decided he was going to play Perry Mason (or was it Paul Drake):
