I shouted out “Who killed the Kennedys?”

Saturday, March 16th, 2019

Billy Kennedy out as head coach of Texas A&M men’s basketball.

151-116 over eight seasons, two Sweet 16 appearances, but 14-18 this season.

Edited to add: with a rebel yell, he cried more more more.

Marvin Menzies out at University of Nevada-Las Vegas. Three years, 17-14 this season, 48-48 overall.

Mike Dunleavy Sr. out at Tulane (Green Wave!).

Dunleavy’s .258 winning percentage (24-69) is the second-poorest among all coaches in school history. The only coach with a poorer winning percentage is Ted Lendhardt, whose 1963-64 team lost the first 22 games before beating LSU in the final game for a 1-22 record (.043).

They were 4-27 this year, lost their last 21 games in a row and went 0-18 in conference.

A wonderful team is the Pelicans…

Friday, February 15th, 2019

Dell Demps out as GM of the New Orleans Pelicans.

I don’t follow the NBA much, so I’m missing a lot of what’s going on here. (Then again, I wouldn’t exactly say I’ve been “missing” it, Bob.) The sources I read say this is fallout from Anthony Davis wanting to be traded, and New Orleans pushing back on offers from the Lakers.

Bob Sutton out as defensive coordinator for Kansas City.

To steal a riff from Tuesday Morning Quarterback, “Sure, you got us to the AFC championship game and into overtime against New England. But what have you done for us lately?”

To steal a riff from TMQ Watch: “Gave up two touchdowns at the end of regulation and failed to stop New England in overtime.”

The Chiefs defense ranked among the worst in the NFL this season. They finished 31st in the regular season in yards allowed (405.5), 24th in yards per play (5.85), and 24th in points per game (26.3).

I’m cold, and there are wolves after me.

Monday, January 7th, 2019

Tom Thibodeau fired as coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves.

He was 97-107 overall (I’m not clear on how long he was coach). The team is 19-21 this season, and had just beaten the Lakers when Thibodeau was called in and fired.

Bloody Monday!

Monday, December 31st, 2018

It’s that time of year, folks. You know the drill.

Non-NFL: “multiple reports” say Steve Alford is out as UCLA basketball coach. I don’t see anything about this in the LAT, but there’s supposed to be a press conference this afternoon.

Marvin Lewis fired as head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals after 16 seasons.

A major storyline of 2018 was a mass exodus of season-ticket holders when the team signed Lewis. They played in front of a nearly half-empty stadium for late-season games against Oakland, Denver and Cleveland. Crowds were at their lowest since the 2011 season, averaging 50,754 tickets distributed.

He was 131-122-3 overall and 0-7 in playoff games.

Adam Gase fired as head coach of the Miami Dolphins.

Gase went 23-25 in his three seasons with the Dolphins, but was just 13-19 after a 10-6 opening season that resulted in a playoff berth.

Vance Joseph out as head coach of the Denver Broncos. He was 11-21 overall, and 6-10 this season.

That’s all I have for now. I’m going to be running around most of the day, but I will try to update if and when I can.

Edited to add: Steve Wilks out as Arizona Cardinals head coach after one season and a 3-13 record.

Edited to add 2: The Atlanta Falcons fired offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian, defensive coordinator Marquand Manuel, and special teams coordinator Keith Armstrong. But they kept Dan Quinn on as head coach.

Also: LAT story on the Steve Alford firing.

Sunday, December 30th, 2018

Major Applewhite out as head coach of the University of Houston.

He was 15-11 over “two plus” seasons, and Houston lost 70-14 in the Armed Forces Bowl (they played Army).

Keep an eye on this space for possible updates. Tomorrow is the traditional day for NFL firings, but given recent trends we could see some this afternoon or tonight.

Edited to add: told you so. Todd Bowles out as head coach of the New York Jets.

Edited to add 2: Horshack is devastated. Dirk Koetter out in Tampa Bay after three seasons. 19-29 overall, and 5-11 the last two seasons.

Monday, December 17th, 2018

Dave Hakstol fired as coach of the Philadelphia Flyers.

Hakstol, 50, had a 134-101-42 record and a .560 points percentage in three-plus seasons as head coach. Two of his teams made the playoffs, but both were eliminated in the first round.
This year’s team has just a .452 points percentage and one of the NHL’s worst home record (5-7-2).

Reggie McKenzie done as general manager of the Oakland Raiders.

Surprisingly, this week’s TMQ does not contain an item in which Gregg Easterbrook complains that McKenzie was a scapegoat for Jon Gruden’s failings as manager. (TMQ Watch will probably be up tonight.)

John DeFilippo fired as offensive coordinator in Minnesota.

Y’all say what?

Tuesday, December 4th, 2018

Fred Hoiberg out as head coach of the Chicago Bulls. Since Chicago still has two newspapers, here’s the Sun Times story.

And the Carolina Panthers fired two defensive assistants (defensive line coach Brady Hoke and assistant secondary coach Jeff Imamura).

Mike McCarthy out as head coach of the Green Bay Packers.

The Pack is not exactly noted for random coach shuffles, but McCarthy was 4-7-1 this season, lost to Arizona on Sunday, and Green Bay is pretty much out of the playoffs for the second season in a row.

McCarthy is 125-77-2 overall in 13 seasons, 10-8 in the playoffs, and has one Super Bowl win (and three NFC Championship losses) to his credit.

I don’t think he’s a bad coach, and someone’s going to be lucky to get him. But it does seem like it just wasn’t working out in Green Bay.

Terry Bowden done as coach of the University of Akron Zips. 35-52 overall, 4-8 (2-6 in conference) this season.

Division I football has been a struggle on and off the field for Akron since the Zips moved up to the top tier in 1987. Since then, no Akron head coach has been successful. Gerry Faust only had two winning Division I seasons out of nine with the Zips; Lee Owens had three out of nine; J.D. Brookhart had two winning seasons out of six; Rob Ianello had none in two years and Bowden only had two in seven years.

Here’s your hat, what’s your hurry?

Sunday, November 25th, 2018

Larry Fedora fired as head coach at the University of North Carolina.

UNC was 2-9 this season and 3-9 last year. Fedora was 45-43 overall in seven seasons, and 28-28 in conference.

Kliff Kingsbury is apparently done at Texas Tech, though this is being couched as “sources say”. There was supposed to be a press conference an hour ago.

35-40 overall in six seasons and 19-35 in Big 12 games.

The Red Raiders lost to Baylor 35-24 on Saturday, ending their third consecutive losing season and fourth in five years.
Under Kingsbury, the Red Raiders also failed to break .500 every year in Big 12 play, extending that streak to nine seasons in a row.

Bobby Petrino is done at Louisville.

2-8 so far this season, and 0-7 in conference.

In great haste: last night was busy, and that’s continued well into today.

David Beaty is out as head coach of Kansas at the end of the season.

Beaty, in four seasons at KU, is 6-39, including a 2-31 record in Big 12 games, 1-19 in road games and 2-2 against FCS opponents.

DJ Durkin, University of Maryland football coach.

This is a long and complicated story that I’ve only been paying a little attention to. The short version is that one of Durkin’s players, Jordan McNair, died of heatstroke during a practice in late May. Durkin was suspended while the university conducted an investigation:

…investigators found disturbing things about the program under Durkin’s leadership, including instances of bullying and humiliation by strength coach Rick Court. It also concluded that players did not feel comfortable going to Durkin with issues. But it also said the school had a dysfunctional athletic department that did not serve Durkin well in his development as a first-time head coach.

The university initially decided, earlier this week, to retain Durkin. But (as I read the coverage) this decision was made under pressure from alumni and boosters, and prompted a revolt among students and members of the football team.

Longer, more detailed timeline from ESPN.

I think this counts.

Izaia Bullock, a linebacker for the Rutgers football team, has been dismissed.

“For violating team rules?” I guess you could say that…

…I do believe most teams have rules against murder plots.

Bullock, 22, “initiated a plot to murder the family members of an acquaintance” earlier in the week, according to a statement from the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.
Bullock was charged Tuesday with two counts of attempted murder in the first degree and two counts of conspiracy to commit murder in the first degree.

I wonder if this was one of those situations you see played out so often on the Justice Network: rich child hires patsy to whack his parents while rich kid is off somewhere setting up an alibi…
