By the hammer of Goodell…

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

this is a bad day for the Saints.

This is going to be well covered elsewhere, short version:

  • Coach Sean Payton is suspended for a year without pay.
  • Gregg Williams, the former defensive coordinator who moved over to the Rams in the off-season, is out “indefinitely” without pay.  Goodell will review Williams’ status at the end of the 2012 season
  • General manager Mickey Loomis is out for the first eight games of the season without pay.
  • Joe Vitt, assistant head coach, is out without pay for the first six games.
  • The Saints will lose second round draft picks in 2012 and 2013.
  • The team will be fined $500,000.
  • “The Saints, individuals disciplined are expected to participate in efforts to develop programs that will instruct on:
    — Respect for game and those who participate in it
    — Principles of fair play, safety and sportsmanship
    — Ensure bounties will not be part of football at any level. “

I may have more thoughts on this later.

Edited to add: Now that I have a little more time to write about this:

  • I was expecting a larger team fine, something like $1 million. $500,000 is still twice what the Patriots were fined, though.
  • A year on the bench for Payton seems right. Reports indicate that will cost him $8 million.
  • If Payton gets a year, though, why does Loomis only get eight games? He disobeyed both the NFL and his owner: I think he’s more culpable than Payton, and should have gotten at least a year. (I called for a lifetime suspension initially. And I still do not think that was out of line.)
  • Why second round picks? Why not first round? Or a first in 2012 and a second in 2013?
  • I would have preferred an outright lifetime ban for Williams, but I think it is too early to complain about the “indefinite” suspension. For me, much depends on what the commissioner does with Williams at the end of the season.

TMQ watch: March 6, 2012.

TMQ generally does not publish outside of the NFL regular season (though Easterbrook does do a couple of columns around draft time). But as soon as the Saints scandal broke, we were expecting TMQ to say something, because:

  • Gregg Easterbrook has been out in front about player safety issues in the NFL, especially concussions.
  • The scandal intimately involves the man TMQ refers to as “the tastefully named Gregg Williams”.

We’ve been watching Page 2 for a couple of days now, but oddly, the first notice we had that Easterbrook’s commentary was up came by way of Pope Jim the First on his Twitter feed. We’ll get to that in a moment. Let’s get started with this special edition of TMQ:

Gregg Easterbrook to the white courtesy phone, please…

Between 22 and 27 defensive players on the New Orleans Saints, as well as defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, maintained a “bounty” program funded primarily by players in violation of NFL rules during the 2009, 2010 and 2011 seasons, the NFL announced Friday.

Holy crap. The Saints were paying their defensive players to injure opposing players.

In some cases, the amounts pledged were both significant and directed against a specific opposing player, according to the league’s investigation.

I’m going to out myself here as something of a closet Saints fan, at least since Katrina. I thought they had a great comeback story, and I was delighted when they won the Super Bowl (especially after being so historically bad for so long).

But this? This is beyond the pale. This doesn’t even compare to what the Patriots did; say what you will about Bill Belichick, but illegal videotaping doesn’t even begin to come close to what the Saints have been doing.

This is the kind of thing where the NFL needs to get out in front of this story now. There’s talk of suspensions, fines, and giving up draft choices; my first reaction is that some people need to be tossed from the league for life. Gregg Williams, who is now defensive coordinator with the Rams, participated. Mickey Loomis, the Saints GM, was told by both the team owner and the NFL to shut down any bounty program that may have existed (the NFL has been investigating since 2009); he did not. Coach Sean Payton “was aware of the allegations, did not make any detailed inquiry or otherwise seek to learn the facts, and failed to stop the bounty program. He never instructed his assistant coaches or players that a bounty program was improper and could not continue,” according to the NFL

I would start with lifetime bans for Loomis and Williams, and a suspension for Payton, and work from there.

In other breaking TMQ related news, Anne Arundel County Executive John R. Leopold has been indicted on charges that he misused his personal security detail. This is still a breaking story, and details are sketchy, but the WP is currently stating that he had his security detail drive him to parking lots and wait around while he “engaged in sex acts with another county employee.” (Apparently, they used a separate vehicle for the sex acts, not the one the security detail was hauling Leopold around in. So at least he’s got that small element of class going for him.)

Good news, everyone!

I’ve come up with a way for you to hear these columns in Professor Farnsworth’s voice!

Also, it turns out that this is the last TMQ of the season! Yes, no bad predictions review this year: just the Super Bowl column and then silence until draft time.

Before we get into this week’s TMQ…well, we were going to snark on Women’s Professional Soccer, but that’s kind of kicking a person when they’re down. (“…average attendance 2,714 before the World Cup final”, “…season’s final average was 3,518, slightly below the 2010 average of 3,601”)

Other than that…well, this is the slowest week in sports. Why don’t we just jump in now and avoid the Super Bowl rush?

Before we jump into this week’s TMQ, we thought we’d mention D.J. Gallo’s list of the worst college basketball blowouts in Division I history. “Long Island 179, Medgar Evers 62”. It took all of Long Island to defeat one guy? And “Texas 102, San Marcos Baptist 1”. “San Marcos Baptist Academy was — and is — a boarding school for teenagers.”

Terrell Owens has signed with Dallas.

Well, technically, Allen.

The Allen Wranglers, that is, of the Indoor Football League.

In the FARK thread on this, I suggested that the Wranglers should also seek out Tiki Barber. But I’m going to throw it open to you, good people; what other notorious team cancers can the Allen Wranglers sign? And if they sign enough of them, will the suburbs of Dallas collapse into a black hole?

(Scalzi’s Schadenfreude pie.)

Notes and updates.

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

Jim Caldwell fired from the Colts. 26-22 over three seasons, 2-14 this year. I don’t think there was anybody who didn’t expect this.

Moving right along, Harris County DA Pat Lykos did testify today before the grand jury investigating her office and the BAT vans.

This is another story where there’s really not much to add beyond the basic fact that she did testify, and apparently did answer questions (as opposed to pleading the Fifth). But we note it here as part of the ongoing story.

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

This was a bad weekend for WCD. The Saints lost. The Packers lost. Eli Manning won. The only bright spot for us was the Patriots winning, and at this point the best we feel like we can hope for is a New England – San Francisco Super Bowl. And now we have to write this week’s TMQ Watch and see what Greggles has to say. Perhaps there will be photos of pleasant looking cheerleaders to relieve our burden.

Hue! Hue! Hue!

Hue Jackson out as head coach of the Oakland Raiders.

One season, 8-8.

Random notes for January 4, 2012.

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

I’d been sort of vaguely following the LA arson case. I knew that they had arrested some German guy driving a van with Canadian license plates, and apparently he was somehow upset over his mother’s immigration issues or something. I didn’t realize how messed up things were until this morning: not only is Mom an illegal alien, but she’s wanted in Germany on 19 counts of fraud (and apparently Germany has requested extradition). It appears that she ripped off a bunch of renters and landlords (I think the NYT said something about her pocketing security deposits), and failed to pay for her breast augmentation surgery in 2004. And the LAT hints that she may have been in business as a “sensual Tantric masseuse”.

Obit watch: Ronald Searle.

Firing watch: Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz and quarterbacks coach Shane Day. The Sun-Times seems to be spinning this as “resignations”, but I’ve seen reporting elsewhere that puts it more in the “you can’t fire me, I quit” category.

NYT headline: “Rangers Coach a Conspiracy Theorist“. Awesome. Does he believe the towers were brought down by the burning mind control agents on the airliners? Sadly, no. His conspiracy theory is much more boring: the officials made bad calls in order to make the game go into overtime.

Da Bears!

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

Reports indicate that Jerry Angelo is out as general manager.

If Pro Football Talk is to be believed, Lovie Smith is next out the door.

ETA: Nope, looks like the Bears love Lovie.

The firings will continue until morale improves.

I had a pretty good day. Bad news: I had to work. Good news: nobody else apparently did. Better news: since nobody else was working, they started letting people (including myself) leave for the day at 11 AM. Even better news: because I left at 11 AM, I was able to spend much of the rest of the day leading my nephews on my sister’s side of the family on a grand expedition. (Slightly bad news: guns were not involved in this expedition. But we had fun anyway.)

The only drawback was that, being on a grand expedition, I wasn’t able to blog the NFL firing news beyond the Rams. Most of these have made FARK, but just for the record:
