Jim Washburn is out as defensive line coach of the Eagles. Yes, already.

Obit watch: David Oliver Relin, journalist and co-author of Three Cups of Tea. I wish I had more to say on this, but right now I’m not sure what I can say.

As I recall, the case of the lawyer who shot at a census worker was well publicized at the time. The lawyer. Carolyn Barnes, denies the incident ever happened. But she was declared incompetent to stand trial and sent off to a state mental hospital.

Here’s the punchline: her law license is still valid, and she’s representing at least one client.

From Barnes’ perspective, the fact that she has been permitted to continue practicing law is clear evidence she should be released from her forced confinement in the state hospital and be allowed to proceed to her own trial. Her logic: If she is legally able to represent Gourley, as she has been doing, then she is more than capable of understanding the charges against her and participating in her own defense – the legal standard used to determine if a defendant is mentally competent to stand trial.

So, in other words: if the state hasn’t taken away her law license, she’s sane and can be tried for shooting at the census worker. If the state takes away her law license, that just certifies that’s she’s insane and can’t stand trial. That’s some catch.

Zig Ziglar, prominent motivational speaker and author. I suspect there will be updates to this.

Not exactly an obit, but Jack Pardee, former coach of:

is terminally ill.

Updates on the loser front.

Noted: this commentary from the Kansas City Star about the Chiefs and growing fan resentment:

Some perspective: Bill Self’s winning percentage at Kansas is .835. Nick Saban’s at Alabama is .831, Tom Brady’s in New England is .774, and Michael Jordan’s in playoff series is .806.
Opponents at Arrowhead Stadium since last November are at .889.

The Washington Wizards are at 0-9, and remain the only NBA team with a shot at going 0-82.

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2012

Before we start in on this week’s TMQ, we want to note a story from today’s New York Times that bothers us. We think it is appropriate to talk about here, as it deals with things TMQ has been hammering on as well. After the jump, we’ll get started…

Another Tuesday has rolled around, and it is time to take a stab at this week’s Tuesday Morning Quarterback. Once again, we’re going to slash our way through the thickets of Easterbrook’s prose, hacking away at logical fallacies when we see them and using our sharp wit to puncture pretense.

Monday, October 15th, 2012

Sorry for the late update, folks. I was away for computers most of the day yesterday.

NFL teams that still have a chance to go 0-16:

None.

Cleveland’s long nightmare is over. My relatives are happy. And thus endeth the loser update for 2012. (I need to go back through my records, but I don’t recall there being no teams without a win this early in the season.)

Mongo no longer pawn in game of life.

There is a quote, commonly attributed to Albert Einstein, (but probably apocryphal, at least in this form) “Make things as simple as possible, but no simpler.”

There is another quote, commonly attributed to an anonymous actor in a commercial, “I’m not a doctor. But I play one on TV.”

What do those have to do with this week’s TMQ? After the jump…

NFL teams that still have a chance to go 0-16:

Cleveland

I had the Cleveland game going on the background while I puttered around the kitchen and read FARK and Briarpatch. This looked like a game the Browns could have, and should have won, if they had just played smarter…

Speaking of playing smarter, I think I’m going to have to add the Chargers to my list of “most consistently overrated teams in the NFL”. Seriously, how do you lose to the Saints, even with the whole Brees record thing?

NFL teams that still have a chance to go 0-16:

Cleveland
New Orleans

Houston The Houston Astros is are at 53-106, for a .333 winning percentage. With three games left, they’re not going to lose 110, but they have tied last year’s record number of losses, and it looks like they’re on track to break that record.

Edited to add: Since I am editing this post anyway (thanks, Lawrence) I’ll mention this HouChron article pointing out that you can get tickets for tonight’s game against the Cubs for “as low as 75 cents”. I haven’t checked to see what tickets for other MLB teams are going for on StubHub, which is why I hesitated to do a post.

Edited to add 2: And Lawrence sent me a link to that HouChron article as well, so he gets a hattip, even though I didn’t see his email before I added the ETA.
