Fred “Fuzzy” Thurston, former Green Bay Packer.

Lombardi, the Hall of Fame coach, led the Packers for nine seasons, and Thurston was there for every one of them. The pre-eminent team of the 1960s, the Packers won championships in 1961, 1962, 1965, 1966 and 1967, including the first two Super Bowls, and though much of the team’s success was built on a ferocious defense, some of the game’s great players — including quarterback Bart Starr, halfback Paul Hornung and fullback Jim Taylor, all Hall of Famers — made Green Bay a powerful offensive force as well.

Thurston was a key element in Green Bay’s implementation of the sweep:

In the sweep, sometimes called the Lombardi sweep for the coach’s fine-tuning of a play that originated in an earlier football era, the two guards are required to pull. That is, instead of pushing forward against the defensive players lined up in front of them, they race in tandem along the line of scrimmage toward one sideline or the other before surging upfield, one ideally blocking a linebacker and the other a defensive back, providing an avenue for the runner behind them.
With Hornung and Taylor carrying the ball behind Thurston and Kramer, the Packer sweep was close to unstoppable, even though opponents often knew it was coming. Generally speaking, guards are among the most anonymous players on the field, but the Green Bay sweep was iconic enough that Thurston and Kramer became well known to football fans.

For reasons we’re not clear on, Lawrence has been giving us a little bit of grief recently about why we continue to write the TMQ Watch. Frankly, we’ve been wondering that ourselves, and the best answer we can come up with is: “Got to. This America, man.”

But it does give us a little bit of pleasure to be able to cross the streams this week:

After the jump, this week’s TMQ…

Two of our new favorite things in the world:

  1. Kickended, an archive of failed Kickstarter projects. And when we say “failed”, we don’t just mean “didn’t meet their goal”; these are projects that attracted no pledges at all.
  2. The Clickbait Headline Generator. The real genius of this is the “View This as a Fake Website” function.
  3. grapes

We actually want to write the “Three Types of Fun You Should Never Have With a Freelance Nurse” article, as we have some ideas for that. Unfortunately, those ideas make us cringe so badly we can’t bring ourselves to start writing.

NFL teams that still have a chance to go 0-16:

Oakland.

The Raiders play Kansas City at home on Thursday. I’m a little nervous about this one.

And in other news, Philadelphia is the only team that has a chance to finish the NBA season 0-82. (Currently, the 76ers are 0-9.)

For the record: Will Muschamp out as coach of the University of Florida Gators. The Miami Herald is representing this as a resignation; reading between the lines, it sounds like he jumped before he could be pushed.

On this date in history, 40 years ago, the Minnesota Vikings beat the L.A. Rams 28-24 on Monday Night Football.

Of greater historical significance, my younger brother was born during halftime of this game.

Happy birthday, Doug.

Musical interlude that has nothing to do with this week’s TMQ. We just needed a musical interlude right about now, and we find this particular version of the song haunting. Yes, we’re in a mood.

For various uninteresting reasons, we actually caught the last few minutes of the London game featuring loser favorites, the Detroit Lions. Rarely has “clown shoes” been a more accurate description.

TMQ’s football gods will be insufferable this week.

The Bears were outclassed, outplayed and outcoached. They had no business being on that field. They offered the most compelling argument favoring a mercy rule. They are the local team most in need of hiring Joe Maddon.

Tell us how you really feel, Steve.

Sounds like the Texans played well. And the Browns somehow managed not to be a factory of sadness this week. As much as I hate Buffalo, the game against the Jets filled me with glee, mostly because watching them struggle makes me even happier than watching Buffalo lose.

I like the Raiders’ chances. Their next three games are against Seattle, Denver, and San Diego, none of whom should lose to Oakland.

Edited to add:

Heh. Heh. Heh.
