Tigers, Tigers, burning bright…

…at the bottom of the AL Central.

Al Avila out as president and general manager in Detroit.

He’d been with the team for 22 years.

During Avila’s tenure, the Tigers finished in last place in the American League Central Division four times and currently occupy the basement with a 43-68 record and a -122 run differential, both third-worst in the majors.

I live in Michigan, I probably have mentioned. So like any good mitten living person, I have watched the Tigers since I was young. And before then, I would listen to them on the old transistor radios that we all used to have. And of course, the Lions of the NFL.
So I have been waiting for the hammer to drop on Al Avila. While this was supposed to be the year for the Tigers, and in professional sport, the won/loss record is the only thing that tends to matter, actually the bottom line is also of come concern as well. And the past few years, the Tigers have spent quite a bit of money, bringing a few very talented, but expensive players to Detroit.
When the Tigers season went the way of the Dodo, the writing was on the wall, for Al Avila, although to be honest, the problem was actually the injuries that happened to starting pitching, as well as players that performed offensively last year, that did not do much this year, along with the ones that they brought in this year that just did not hit.
With all of that being said, the future is still not bleak, since they have a solid core of talent, along with the right mix of pitching in the bullpen that should give them a much improved team next year.
The Lions are the same as they always are, full of hope and promise. But I actually paid the 10 bucks a month to get HBO Max in order to watch Hard Knocks, the NFL Films show where they follow a team through training camp. So you know that if me, a cheap old guy, is willing to spent money, then I must be expecting more of the Lions than just an excuse to have the television on with the volume down low on Sunday. The coach, Dan Campbell is probably the highlight of the show, with the first show having aired this week. And he will be the reason for the Lions success this year, if they perform well. A former player, he is the kind of coach and former player that you would expect to be in a town like Detroit. And he has surrounded himself with other very good, former players, who are also of the same type of mindset. Keep an eye on the Lions this year, they might just be the dark horse to contend.

Thanks for the background, pigpen. Detroit’s pretty far from my backyard, so knowing what’s going on with the Lions and Tigers is useful for me.
