{"id":10148,"date":"2013-06-11T09:15:00","date_gmt":"2013-06-11T14:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sportsfirings.com\/?p=10148"},"modified":"2013-06-11T12:50:09","modified_gmt":"2013-06-11T17:50:09","slug":"from-the-legal-beat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sportsfirings.com\/?p=10148","title":{"rendered":"From the legal beat."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have previously written about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsfirings.com\/?s=Barnes\">the strange case of Carolyn Barnes<\/a>, the local lawyer who was accused of shooting at a census worker, sent to the state mental hospital (where she continued to represent at least one client) and was later ruled competent to stand trial.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chron.com\/news\/texas\/article\/Texas-lawyer-guilty-of-shooting-at-census-worker-4593035.php\">Ms. Barnes was convicted yesterday of assault with a deadly weapon.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>She could be sentenced to up to 20 years in jail, though I have serious doubts that she will be given that much time.<\/p>\n<p>In other news, the <strong>Statesman<\/strong> is reporting that Governor Perry is threatening to withhold funding for the &#8220;state\u2019s Austin-based ethics-enforcement unit&#8221; unless Travis County DA Rosemary Lehmberg resigns. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsfirings.com\/?cat=140\">As you may recall<\/a>, Ms. Lehmberg was convicted of DWI back in April and sentenced to 45 days in jail.<\/p>\n<p><del>I apologize that the link stinks.<\/del> The <strong>Statesman<\/strong>&#8216;s new paywall goes into effect today, and I have been unable to find a link to this story elsewhere. (Edited to add: Link? What link? Seriously, I griped about the\u00a0<strong>Statesman<\/strong> link but forgot to actually include it. Here&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.chron.com\/texaspolitics\/2013\/06\/perry-veto-of-funds-could-cripple-cprit-inquiry-dems-say\/\">a story from the <b>HouChron<\/b> &#8220;Texas Politics&#8221; blog that reports the same thing<\/a>: the\u00a0<strong>Hou<\/strong><strong>Chron\u00a0<\/strong>blogger suggests that this is part of an effort to cut off &#8220;a criminal investigation into the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas&#8221;.)<\/p>\n<p>I haven&#8217;t decided what I&#8217;m going to do about the <strong>Statesman<\/strong> yet. Paying for digital access would give me a tax write-off for Low Fat Heavy Industries. On the other hand, the cheapest subscription is $9.99 a month.
