The most fun I’ve had recently with my clothes on…

…or, for that matter, off.

I’ll start with the musical interlude. I rather like this, though the banjo player should put on a damn shirt.

So, last night, I was down at the Austin Film Society. (It sounds more amusing if you say it with kind of a snooty accent.) What was I doing there? Getting some culture into my system…

Specifically, I went to see Joe Bob Briggs and “How Rednecks Saved Hollywood”. Summary: go see this if you have a chance. Unfortunately, I’m not sure when you will, unless you live in Providence. But if Joe Bob comes to your town, go see him, and I’m kind of hoping that someone will release a home video version of “How Rednecks…”

There are a lot of great lines that I wish I could quote, but I don’t want to ruin them for people. (I will say that every time Lawrence brings this up as a possible movie to watch, I’m going to point out that it should actually be called “Forrest F–king Gump” and suggest that we re-watch “Sling Blade” instead.)

And I’m actually tempted to join AFS: it is at least as good a place to see movies as the Alamo, if not better. (They don’t have as large a food selection, but I haven’t been really wild about the Alamo’s food selection recently either.) And they conform with the Alamo best practice of showing related video material before the show, rather than “trivia contests” or soda commercials. (The last time I went to a movie at a Cinemark theater, the show included “games” that you could play if you had an app on your phone. Perhaps I am a cranky old man, but: hell to the no on that one.)

The preshow is where I picked up the Steve’n’Seagulls video above, as well as this quaint and curious bit of 70s culture. Oddly, I had never seen this trailer before, and I still haven’t seen the movie. (Need to get a copy and talk Lawrence into it for movie night: RoadRich should not need much persuasion. And after all, it was directed by Sam Peckinpah. Plus: Ali MacGraw!)
